Distinguished and Famous people from Bathurst Region

The Bathurst region's stories reach from railway workshops and local homes to parliament and the recording of war. These people retained their place in local history even as their work took on national significance.

🤝 Ben Chifley

Ben Chifley spent formative childhood years with his grandfather at Limekilns near Bathurst, helping on the farm and attending the local school. He later worked on the railways in Bathurst and entered federal parliament as the member for Macquarie in 1928. Prime minister from 1945 to 1949, he helped direct postwar reconstruction. His house with Elizabeth Chifley in Busby Street remained their home through his political career. The region was a continuing personal and electoral base, well beyond the fact of his birth.

📚 Charles Bean

Born in Bathurst in 1879, Charles Bean spent his early years around All Saints' College, where his father was headmaster. He later trained in law at Oxford before pursuing journalism. As official correspondent during the First World War, he compiled extensive diaries and notes, then used such records in writing Australia's official war history. His work also helped bring the Australian War Memorial into being. A childhood interest in history developed into a career devoted to recording and preserving it.

🌾 Allan Callaghan

Allan Callaghan was born at Perthville in 1903 and attended its public school and Bathurst High before studying agriculture at the University of Sydney. At Roseworthy, students knew him as The Doc. He revised teaching, relaxed oppressive student rules and strengthened the scientific basis of farm management, with initiatives in dairying, plant breeding and wine studies. Later he directed South Australian agriculture and chaired the Australian Wheat Board, using scientific knowledge and diplomatic skills to develop markets. His working life linked experiments in crops with the institutions and relationships needed to put agricultural knowledge into practice.
